Full Text

Sept. 7. As the Sense of the Publick, about the Restitution of G-r. seems to be tried, in idle Stuff dated from the Hague, and vented in some of the Papers, one may take Leave to observe, that a Navigation in the American Seas, without Search or Visit, may be obtained, and G-r kept too: That giving up a Place of such Importance, may indeed be a Means of obtaining a free Navigation, but not enjoying it long; since a new Rupture would cancel all Treaties, and in a new Treaty the mighty Boon could not be obtained again, as we should then have nothing to give for it: Whereas, by keeping G-r, and letting the Spaniards know how much it is in our Power to distress them, by making a proper Use of certain Southern States, we might get all Points now in Litigation settled to our Satisfaction.

Event Details

Public opinion on restituting G-r (Gibraltar) is tested via reports from The Hague; argument that free navigation in American seas without search can be gained while keeping G-r, as surrendering it risks loss in future conflicts, whereas retention allows pressuring Spaniards via southern states to settle disputes favorably.
