JERUSALEM (AP) - A young Jew told the Eichmann trial court yesterday that at 13 he was forced to extract the gold teeth from bodies of gassed victims in the Chelmno concentration camp.
Simon Srebnik, a Polish-born mechanic now in Israel, testified he saw an average of 1,200 Jews paraded to their deaths daily over a period of nine months.
The routine was always the same, he said. The Jews were given towels and soap and 80 to 100 at a time were herded into a big van and driven away.
"The doors were hermetically sealed," he said. "When the van moved on, the gas would enter it and in this way they all were killed."
Srebnik's job was to pull gold out of the teeth of the bodies on their arrival at the crematorium.
"I do not sleep well at night. Those horrid pictures are still haunting me," the witness said.
Atty. Gen. Gideon Hausner said Eichmann was responsible for the Jews being sent to such death camps and "therefore is responsible for what happened to them there."
Srebnik said all the Jews forced into the operational work of the death camp were chained night and day.
