A LUCKLESS JUDGE.

"Hon. J. R. Lewis, formerly Associate Justice of the Supreme Court of Idaho, has returned to that Territory and taken up his residence in Boise City, where he intends to practice his profession."

Judge Lewis is the man who resigned against his will. About a year ago he was one day greatly astonished by receiving a notification from Washington that his resignation had been filed and accepted. This was the first intimation the Judge had that he had resigned. A few days afterward his successor arrived and took his position, as he has held it ever since. Lewis claimed that the letter to the Department was a forgery, as he had never signed any document of the kind. The U. S. Grand Jury indicted a resident of Boise City on the charge of forging the resignation. The case was tried before Lewis' successor, and was finally dismissed, the prosecution failing to find anything in the United States statutes making the offense a crime. The matter was then brought before the Territorial Grand Jury and an indictment found under an act of the Legislature making the offense a misdemeanor. On trial in the District Court the jury found a verdict for the defendant. It was generally believed that the real instigator of the document was one of the loco-foco Judges, who used a private citizen to disguise his handwriting. However this may have been Judge Lewis found himself out in the cold, and another Judge in his seat, having neither resigned, been removed, nor served his time out. As a claim in lieu of all this the Administration appointed him Associate Judge in New Mexico, which nomination, we believe, the Senate refused to confirm. We presume the Judge has returned to "get even" as best he may. Altogether it was a singular case.
