Full Text
One of the greatest exertions made by the French in naval architecture this war, was building the Royal Louis at Brest: she carries 112 brass guns, chosen out of 240, cast for the purpose; the lower deckers 54 pounders, the middle deckers 36, and the upper ones 24 pounders, which is such a weight of metal as no other ship now in the world can boast; her full complement is 1340 men; and her burthen 2700 tons.- Her timbers are proportioned to her size, and were chiefly imported from Silesia, by way of Hamburg. It is calculated, that her building cost nearly as much as four 74's. Two other ships of equal size and force, and to be built on the same model, are now on the stocks at Brest, and expected to be launched during the course of the year 1784.
