Authentic letters from New-Orleans, of January 12th, state that Mobile is still in possession of the Spaniards; but the citizens of the town and vicinity refuse to obey the orders of the Spanish commandant, alleging that the President of the United States having promised to protect them in their liberty, property and religion, they will be true and faithful in their allegiance to the United States.

We have also accounts from Mobile direct to the 7th ult. at which time nothing extraordinary had happened. Col. Cushing, with the troops on board the gun-boats, arrived at Mobile on the 2d inst. passed the fort without interruption, and anchored above the town, where they lay on the 6th, without having landed any of the troops. Immediately on the arrival of Col. Cushing, the militia were disbanded.

It unfortunately happens, where the people of a territory are too far removed from the seat of government to feel a proper respect for its authority, instead of using their efforts, in a case of emergency, to maintain the empire of the laws and support the officers of government in the performance of their duty, they form wild schemes, of their own, and every one who dares interpose his authority to thwart them in their schemes, whether of plunder or domination, immediately incurs their enmity In this way the Kempers and their adherents, who had flattered themselves with the hope of plunder or domination in Florida, finding themselves disappointed, vent their rage against those prudent & valuable officers of government whose energies have been exerted to repress their disorder and violence. In such a situation, and suffering under every persecution that malice or hatred can invent from the disorganizers, the worthy administrators, of the law must at least find consolation in the knowledge that their conduct meets the approbation of all considerate men, and that the efforts of their enemies are daily appreciated where they had hoped they would be most successful. This is the only notice which we think proper to take of certain communications we have received from that country, designed for publication, chiefly aimed at that zealous and trusty public servant, Judge Toulmin-Nat. Intel.
