Full Text

The Anniversary.

To-day, we learn, is the birth-day of freedom. It will be commemorated as the anniversary of the occasion when sundry respectable gentlemen of the last century laid in a stock of the blessings of liberty, for themselves and their posterity, of which blessings the posterity have been so prodigal that the original supply is pretty well exhausted.

The day will be very generally celebrated, much, we suppose, on the principle that people observe Washington's birthday, as the anniversary of that which in its time was very great, but which unfortunately, is now very dead.

Like all other Christian patriots, the folks of the REGISTER "will go through the motions" and join the general jubilation out of respect for the custom, saying nothing of their sad misgivings as to the propriety of jubilees about liberty in a country that is cursed with the Fortieth Congress. No paper will be issued from this office to-morrow.
