Full Text

Artesian Wells.—Since the citizens of our village have succeeded in obtaining an abundant supply of water, by digging and boring, others in the neighborhood have followed with equal success. Mr. Sheffield, of Swan creek, has been engaged, for the past few days, in boring for water. He reached the depth of between eighty and ninety feet, when a vein of water was struck which gushed up with tremendous force. He proceeded to lower pumps, in order to keep the passage clear, which filled with sand, and prevented water from rising as freely as when perfectly free from obstruction. After giving vent in the passage by pumping, the water gushes up with such force as to throw it seventy feet above the surface of the ground. A large quantity of small stone are also thrown equally as high above the surface, at such times.—Delta Press.
