The Baltimore and Ohio Railroad Company has just completed its tunnel under Baltimore, which is 1.72 miles long, and cost $3,000,000. It is lined with brick throughout, and immense quantities of stone for the foundations and backing up of the walls. The arch at Fulton street, says the Gazette, was completed within two minutes of the time when the key stone was placed in the face of the arch at Pennsylvania avenue. This is the longest tunnel in the Union except the incomplete Hoosac tunnel. The contract to build it was made on the 27th of August, 1871, and the work was completed on the 17th of May - one year and a little less than eight months. It is set down as the most rapidly completed work of its magnitude ever undertaken in the Union.
When the tunnel of the same road under Washington is completed, and in direct connection with the rail from Washington via Alexandria to Occoquan, a considerable facility will be added to the means of travel between the South and North very much to the advantage of the public, especially in winter, when the ice lays its embargo upon the river transportation.
The rails will be laid in the Baltimore tunnel and the trains running through in a very few days. When the like facility shall be afforded at Washington, and the delay of about an hour which has occurred in travel there is ended by a straight shoot through that city it will be a great blessing to passengers. We wish the same facility afforded to persons going through Washington that we give them in going through Richmond.
