TRIED AND TRUE.

AT THE LEGISLATIVE HEARING on the proposal to make The Madison Democrat the official state paper instead of The Madison Journal, the supporters of the measure frankly acknowledged that they considered the official state paper "a plum" to be placed where it will do the most good.

The Madison Journal has offended the Republican faction that is in control of the state government and the administration purposes to punish it.

There is a disposition on the part of some of the administration's supporters to abandon The Madison Democrat and reward The Evening Wisconsin. We have no authority to speak for our contemporary, but none the less we feel fully warranted in assuring the conservative members of the legislature that should they designate The Evening Wisconsin to be the official state paper no occasion will arise to cause them to regret their action.

We have been familiar with the editorial utterances of The Evening Wisconsin from the time that it ceased putting down the rebellion to its support of the Democratic candidate for governor two years ago. It has been consistently conservative and impervious to progress.

The Evening Wisconsin, if given the state paper plum, will do nothing rash or radical to forfeit the legislature's confidence. It moves with caution. It deliberates with care. It is not emotional. It cackles over no porcelain eggs.
