A PATRIOTIC SERVICE
Loyal labor, whether Democratic, Republican or Socialist, has accomplished a splendid patriotic work in the Minneapolis meeting of the Alliance for Labor and Democracy, through its aggressive utterances in support of the war, its influence in suppressing disloyalty, and its assistance to the new republic of Russia. Labor of America, speaking direct to the labor of Russia, should make for a better understanding and larger co-operation, and leave less opportunity for the mischievous work of pro-German plotters who have contributed so much to the confusion of the Slav democracy.
It is curious that, in a war between autocracy and democracy, involving the continued maintenance of our free institutions, there should have been any doubt as to the duty of citizenship, or any division of sentiment among the elements of our national life that are striving for larger liberties. Loyal Socialists and loyal labor leaders and other patriotic citizens have combined, in the Alliance for Labor and Democracy, to make the war issue clear, and their efforts will have a large influence for good not only in this country, but in Russia, and in other war countries of Europe.
Men like Samuel Gompers, John Spargo, Charles Edward Russell, Frank P. Walsh, James Duncan, and others like them, have risen above local differences, to a plane of citizenship on which every American, of whatever party or propaganda, may meet them, and call them brothers.
