Full Text
Judge John L. T. Sneed will be a candidate for Governor. No gentleman in Tennessee would fill the position with more ability, credit and honor. West Tennessee was given but one Judge by the Convention. Let us have the Governor, and let Judge Sneed be the man.—Memphis Ledger.
Go slow, dear friends. No doubt Judge Sneed would make an excellent Executive. But West Tennessee of all the divisions of the State has the least cause to get hump-backed as to what has fallen to her share in the division of State officers. She has the Governor, she has a United States Senator, she has the Secretary of State, she has the Secretary of the Treasury, she has the Superintendent of Public Instruction, she has the Warden of the Penitentiary, besides a catalogue of minor honors too tedious to mention. Let not vaulting ambition o'er leap itself. East Tennessee claims the succession, and at the proper time will present a good and acceptable man for the Executive chair. Meantime, let Judge Sneed accept the more dignified and profitable position of Attorney General and State Reporter, and keep out of politics.
