Full Text
There is some wit, as well as truth, in the following article from a Vermont paper:
Encouragement of Domestic Manufactures.
The Boston Gaz. states, that "the Old South Society in that city are now erecting in their church a large & elegant organ, imported from London, said to be much superior to any ever imported into this country."
The Old South Society have undoubtedly a right to dispose of their money as they please; but it would have appeared more economical had they purchased a better one at the excellent factory not perhaps 50 feet distant from their church, which would have saved several thousand miles of transportation; and they would also have displayed their patriotism in encouraging domestic manufactures. Although organs have been ordered from the Boston establishment to several parts of the Union, and been highly approved, still perhaps they were not considered good enough for the Old South Society; in which case it is hoped they have completed their folly by also importing the necessary appendages, viz. an English bellows blower, an English audience, and a sufficient quantity of genuine English wind.
