CITY ITEMS.
April 1.
No Municipal court to-day.
The Board of Commissioners meet this morning.
The Court of Appeals has adjourned until next Saturday.
Hail yesterday morning, but not of a damaging nature however.
WHEELING Temperance Union No. 1 moves into Mozart Hall to day.
The Board of Equalization adjourned over from Saturday until to-morrow.
There is to be a gas main laid on South Penn street during the present week.
The showman, Alf. Burnett, delivered a temperance address, at Ott's hall last night.
BILL collectors are somewhat puzzled to know where certain debtors have moved to.
Three deeds of trust and one deed in fee was recorded in the office of the county clerk Saturday.
The Cincinnati Sunday Breakfast Table was sold quite extensively on our streets yesterday morning.
A New superintendent, for the Top Mill, has been elected. The lucky gentleman is J. H. McCurn, of Bellaire.
Last week one load of broken stone was placed in the mud hole at the intersection of Eoff and Fourteenth street.
The Frazier Pantomime Troupe is booked to appear in this city some time during the present month. Dates not set
The Necktie social at Parker Hall on Saturday night was largely attended, and we learn the receipts were considerable.
The stone crossing at the North and South ends of the Second ward market house have been neatly repaired by the Street Commissioners.
To-day Messrs. Thornburg & Russell open a new store at Elm Grove as successors to the firm of W. F. Chambers & Co. Success, gentlemen.
Extensive arrangements have been made by the Social Club of South Wheeling for a grand calico hop at Koch's Hall on next Friday night.
A special session of Council has been called for to-morrow evening to consider the Garbage ordinance, and to let the contracts for taking away the garbage.
There is a call for a meeting of the stockholders of the Wheeling Gymnasium at their hall this evening. Important business renders it necessary for the call.
The residents of Thirty-first street and Jacob street, between Thirty first and Thirty second streets, say they would be glad if the city garbage man would pay them a visit.
MR. I. S. PLANT, representing the great raffle house of Merwin & Metzger, New York, is stopping at the St. James. He is an affable gentleman, and well calculated to make friends.
THE Sunday School Association of the city will meet to-morrow evening at the lecture room of the First Presbyterian Church, for the purpose of electing officers for 1878, and for mutual interchange of views.
Auctioneer Hervey, of Hervey, Britt & Co, offered for sale, last Saturday, the property of Alex. Gillespie Mary Shipley, Caroline Eberling and Frank Winship. The property was withdrawn for the present on account of low bids.
Hugo Loos has removed his cigar factory and cigar store from his old stand on Twelfth street, where he has done business for the past nine years, to 1225 Market street, where he has a fine lot of goods.
A LETTER of inquiry was sent to Postmaster Rowling, by John Oliver, of West Lebanon, Indiana county, Pa., asking the whereabouts of Julia and Rebecca Haycock. The letter states that money has been left by a deceased sister, for the parties mentioned.
The body of Robert P. Wilson—late Major in the U. S. army, arrived in the city Saturday, via the P. W. & Ky. road The remains were met at the depot by a number of the members of the Bates Lodge No. 33 A. F. & M. and escorted to the residence of Captain Andrew Wilson, South Side.
WE understand that among the improvements to be made at St. Alphonso Church will be an entire set of new stained windows. When all the repairs shall have been completed, St. Alphonso will be the most handsomely furnished inside of any Catholic church in the city.
Last Saturday George Q Black, City Collector, was before Judge Cranmer, of the Municipal Court, in the case of A. & D. H. Chambers vs. Smith & Co. judgment debtor, to answer a suggestion. The case was postponed until next Thursday, at which time Mr. Black will make a full statement relative to this case.
The beardless Standard scribe, who is of light build and fair complexion, 'stumbled upon an interesting item' in the shape of old-rates, at the County Clerk's office, last Saturday, while rummaging amongst the musty tomes of that office. The stumble must have injured the scribe, from all appearances yesterday.
Sam Bailey was the successful competitor for the pet deer at the wheeling match at Frank Walters, out the pike last Saturday. Sam took it to be a small elephant on hand, and sold it to Charles Bingell for $10. Mr. Bingell then presented it to Mr. Butterfield. Owing to the bad weather, there was a small attendance present.
Tuesday is to be an excursion over the P. W. & K. R. R. to Pittsburgh, and return during the engagement of Booth at that city this week. The rates, round trip, have been reduced to $1.50. This will afford our citizens a fine chance to see the new road as the trip will be made in daylight. The time for leaving this city will be announced to-morrow.
The B. & O. R. R. investigating committee, which is composed of members of the Senate and House of Representatives, have ordered the Auditor of the State to make out a detailed statement of taxes paid into the treasury by the B & O. R. R. Company from 1869 to 1878, inclusive. Clerk, W. P. Adams, of the Auditor's office, is now engaged in preparing the desired papers for the joint committee.
Sunday School Convention
For the benefit of delegates or alternates, and members of their families, desiring to attend the International Sunday School Convention, to be held at Atlanta, Ga, April 17, 18 and 19, the Pittsburgh, Cincinnati and St. Louis Railway Company, Pan-Handle Route, will sell cheap excursion tickets from Wheeling to Atlanta, and return, via Cincinnati, Louisville, Nashville and Chattanooga.
Delegates taking this route will have an opportunity to visit the Mammoth Cave of Kentucky, and Lookout Mountains near Chattanooga, en route. Tickets good going from April 10th to 16th, and to return until May 10th, 1878, will be on sale at P. C. & St. L. Ry. depot, foot of Eleventh street Wheeling $41.00 for round trip.
Railroad Investigation.
The special Legislative Investigating committee will sit on the Baltimore and Ohio railroad's little crookednesses, this week. If everybody who has heretofore claimed to have a grievance against this corporation, will now put their grumblings into the shape of legal evidence, the matter will become interesting.
