Philadelphia, Philadelphia County, Pennsylvania

What is this article about?

An anonymous letter to Mr. Wayne questions the credibility of a clergyman's letter in the Aurora, corroborated by Tench Coxe and William Barton at Lancaster. It suggests the clergyman is Parson Jones, a Jacobin liar known for slandering Washington and Ross, and identifies Barton and Coxe as Revolutionary War deserters or traitors.

For the Gazette of the United States
MR. WAYNE,

THE Aurora of yesterday morning contains what is called a Copy of a Letter from a Clergyman, corroborative of certain statements made at Lancaster, by the said Clergyman, in the presence of Tench Coxe and William Barton. Being an old man, and not very conversant in politics, I am not able "clearly to decipher" the meaning of the letter. I shall therefore wait till some of your friendly correspondents can "respond" to the following queries:

I. Is it not very probable that the clerical author of the letter is the notorious Parson JONES of CERTIFICATE MEMORY, the caitiff who travelled from Pittsburgh to Philadelphia before the late election, publishing "charges of infidelity" against James Ross of Pittsburgh? If it be the same man, he formerly was well known in General Wayne's army; lives now in Chester county, is a notorious Jacobin and liar, and has been in the habit of aspering the character of the immortal Washington.

2. Is it not probable that William Barton is the same man who left America about the commencement of the Revolutionary War, and took up his residence in OLD ENGLAND, where he was ardently employed in the investigation of Heraldry? The same man who said that Alexander Jod-i "Dallas was as dam'd a rascal as remained unbung?"

3. Is it not equally probable that the Tench Coxe there mentioned, is the identical person who held an office in the American army, and who afterwards deserted to the British, and escorted Lord Howe's army into the city of Philadelphia, about the year 1778?
