Full Text

Highway Robbery.

A startling incident occurred on the levee yesterday afternoon. An emigrant named Fred Fisher was induced to enter one of the low dives there, and plied with mean whisky until his senses deserted him. A couple of low white thieves, James Crawford and Tim Shannon, attempted to rob him in the dive, but failed, and followed him up the levee. Decoying him behind a pile of salt, Crawford, a mean looking, one-eyed cutthroat, sprang upon his back and bore him down, while his pal rifled his pockets. Officer Chastaine suddenly made his appearance at this juncture, and Shannon allowed the money to slide back into the man's pocket. Before the court this morning the evidence was conclusive, and resulted in both of the rascals being sent to jail to answer before the criminal court for highway robbery. The proprietor of the dive, who was present, was threatened with a raid by the police, if he allowed such men to frequent his premises.
