Full Text

The "crank" crop seems to be unusually large this year, and a peculiarity of the prevailing madness appears to be drawing to the National Capital all the lunatics outside of the asylums. Whether there is anything in the air of Washington that naturally attracts distorted intellects is not yet fully determined, but in order to preserve "a Republican form of Government," as required by the Constitution, it would be advisable as a precautionary measure to fence the Capital in. The last demented visitor at Washington claimed to be the Vice-President elect, and that Davis was a usurper. It is stated that he was of the pious, temperance style of crank, and claimed relationship with Thomas Jefferson.
