THRILLING INCIDENT

During the high wind on Tuesday night, the rudder of the steamboat Lexington was so much damaged in the sound, on her way to N. York, as to be useless, and render the boat unmanageable. In this dilemma, MR. ISAAC K. DUSTAN, mate of the Lexington, permitted himself to be suspended over the stern by a rope, and, by great exertion succeeded in restoring the rudder to use. Mr. Dustan was thirty or forty minutes in, and a greater part of the time under water, in a heavy sea, and, it need not be stated, at the imminent risk of life. As a testimony of admiration for such gallant daring, the passengers on board presented him with a purse of $125, which however, he modestly declined to accept. They however pressed upon him, after their arrival at New York, an elegant diamond breast-pin, and silver lever watch with an appropriate inscription, and a hat. These were accepted, as a keepsake. Such manly acts are not to be paid for in money.
