FALMOUTH, ENGLAND--TINY RESCUE ARMADA helped by favoring weather -tows helpless Flying Enterprise to within 80 miles of safety.

FALMOUTH, Jan. 8 (INS)--The Flying Enterprise -- now nicknamed "The Stranded Whale" Its gallant captain and his one-man "crew" approached within 80 miles today of Falmouth, where a rousing welcome awaits them.

Friendly winds estimated at 20 miles per hour by the Land's End Weather Bureau at 10 a.m. (5 a.m. EST) produced larger ocean "swells" which may result in heavier "yawing" (deviation from course) and delay the arrival at Falmouth beyond noon Wednesday.

The 6,700-ton freighter is being towed by the British tug Turmoil. A growing escort includes the U. S. Destroyer Willard Keith. All are proceeding at a speed of two and a half to three knots.

The Scilly Islands coast guard radio station reported it had heard Captain Henrik Kurt Carlsen of the Flying Enterprise talking with Captain Leslie O'Brien of the Keith. The station said they both sounded "jovial."

The Keith radioed the "tow is proceeding nicely" and that four tugs joined the odd convoy during the night providing what amounts to an "honor escort" for the Isbandtsen Line freighter.

In Falmouth, where one of every four residents makes his livelihood from the sea, a hero's welcome was prepared not only for Capt. Henrik Kurt Carlsen, Danish-born Captain of the freighter, but for Capt. Dan Parker of the Turmoil and Kenneth Dancy.

Dancy, a crew member of the Turmoil, joined Carlsen aboard the freighter Friday to help him secure the tow-line and "nurse" the Flying Enterprise to safety.

Numerous tugs and other craft in the busy harbor already are advertising "See the Enterprise" excursions for the time when the ship, dubbed by residents the "Stranded Whale," and Carlsen, now called "Captain Courageous," enter the harbor.

Most of the city's population and hundreds of persons from nearby villages are expected to line the shore and headland for a glimpse of the Flying Enterprise. It is expected to be visible first from the Lizard Coast Guard Station. Then word will be flashed to the harbor.

Official preparations for receiving the heroes call for a civic reception Thursday morning by Mayor T. L. Morris and possibly a welcome home dinner.
