Full Text

From his Majesty's speech, relative to the late riots in London, it is likely that a most solemn enquiry will be made into the conduct of Lord George Gordon, and that of some others; the King says, "proper orders have been given for bringing the authors and abettors of these insurrections, and the perpetrators of such criminal acts to speedy and condign punishment, &c."

How far terming what has been done felony and treason, before trial and evidence, was agreeable to the spirit of the constitution, is left to the Lawyers.

Be this as it may, the address was moved for, and carried wholesale. But in the re-echoing part, how they will tell the Sovereign, that he has ever made the laws of the realm, and the principles of our constitution, the rule and measure of his conduct, is left to patriots and politicians to determine.

It is but justice to observe, that Lord Mansfield's speech, on the occasion, was clear and masterly.

It was marked by argument, precision, and a noble liberality of sentiment, respecting religious liberty. One part of this speech is noticeable, where his Lordship says, speaking of the riot, said, that religion could not have been the motive, &c. This should teach us to suspend giving judgment or throwing blame, without evidence, on any set or party, till the whole of this vile, mysterious affair shall be properly investigated.
