MORN IN THE EAST!

MAINE IS MARCHING TO THE RESCUE.

The intelligence from the State of Maine of the probable issue of the recent election, only affords another proof how utterly impossible it is to estimate majorities or anticipate, with any great degree of correctness, results, when the tide of public opinion has set decidedly in favor of one of the candidates.—We venture to say that no man in the Union out of that State looked with any sort of confidence for the astonishing result disclosed by the ballot-boxes.—There were many indeed who expected, and more who hoped, that the influence of Vermont's glorious example would be felt in Maine, and that the spirit of inquiry which there as elsewhere, was abroad among the People, would be attended by the most beneficial consequences. But none were so sanguine as to look for a change so gratifying and complete as seems to have occurred in Maine. What the Van Buren men will say to this result we are entirely at a loss to know. Before the election in Indiana took place, they were sure of carrying that State; but no sooner was it known that the Whigs had 9,000 majority there, than these wiseacres declared the result to be just what they expected. So too in North Carolina—previous to the election they were positive that Saunders the Locofoco candidate, would succeed—but after the contest was over and Morehead's triumph ascertained, it was all "just as they expected."

Again in Vermont, though they did not venture to claim the Green-Mountain State, they talked largely of gain there—but here too the result showed the fallacy of their expectations, and straightway these honest gentlemen fell to abusing that gallant State, and comforted themselves with the declaration that nothing better could be looked for from the "British Whigs, blue-light federalists and ultra abolitionists who made up her population. This was all well enough, we suppose—but what can be said to explain the defeat in Maine? Did our Loco-Foco friends expect that too?—Ibid.

The recent election in Maine resulted in an astonishing Whig victory, contrary to expectations, influenced by public opinion and Vermont's example. Locofoco (Van Buren) supporters had predicted wins in Indiana, North Carolina, and gains in Vermont but faced defeats and adjusted claims afterward.
