An Hour With The Bible
By H. K. WHITE
And they that heard it said, "Who then can be Saved?" Luke 18. At the close of one of the Master's discourses a rich young ruler came forward and asked the Master, what he might do to inherit eternal life or to become a member of Christ's church. Being a Jew, the Master asked him concerning keeping of the commandments. He informed the Master that he had kept these from his youth up. The Master knew then, that he would make a faithful Christian, if only he would come up to the requirements of the Christian faith. To his answer the Master replied, "Yet lacketh thou one thing. sell all that thou hast and distribute unto the poor, and thou shalt have treasure in heaven; and come and follow me." To this young ruler, this demand was too high a price to pay. He waited a compromise from the Master, but failing to receive such, he returned to his seat sorrowful. The Master was indeed testing the church that day. Even the disciples questioned among themselves, Who then can be saved? The Master encouraged their hearts with these words:
There is no man that hath left house or parents or brethren or wife or children for the kingdom of God's sake who shall not receive manifold more in this present time and in the world to come life everlasting. Nearly 2000 years have passed and we still find professed Christians asking this same question, Who then Can be saved?
Today men are trying to justify themselves in asking such a question by saying, there are so many different religious beliefs or so many doctrines. But the answer that Jesus gave the rich young ruler, the answer He gave to His disciples is still the answer to the problem and with no compromise.
David asked this question and received this same answer only in different wordings, see Psalm 15 and 24, "Lord, who shall abide in the Holy Hills? He that walketh uprightly and worketh righteousness and speaketh the truth in his heart. He that backbiteth not nor doeth evil, nor taketh up a reproach against his neighbor. He that putteth not out his money to usury nor taketh reward against the innocent, He lifteth not up his soul unto vanity, nor sworn deceitfully. He shall receive the blessing from the Lord and righteousness from the God of his Salvation."
