Full Text
A parting word to Mr. Elisha R. Potter.
The result of the Senatorial election should teach you, that your political life has expired, and that your machinations to destroy the fame of a private individual, and the character of an eminent statesman, have fallen, with tenfold vengeance, on your own head. It should teach you, that intrigue, artifice and malice, will sometimes fail, and that a political incendiary cannot fail of receiving, when exposed, the execrations and indignation of a virtuous people. From your youth upwards, your political career has been marked by a species of hypocrisy, vacillation and deceit, which has placed upon you a mark, which the damps of the grave can only obliterate. Sir, you have fallen, and, like Lucifer, you have fallen—never to rise again; like him, whose name is associated with the detestation of his countrymen, you have closed your political career, to be remembered only to be despised. Go, we beseech you, sir, to the shades of retirement, and there do penance for your political aberrations, and weep over your folly. And when you shall have secluded yourself from the gaze of an insulted people, reflect, and console yourself, if you can, with the bitter recollection, that you madly rushed on to your own ruin, and dashed yourself down the precipice of political pollution.
Farewell; we part forever; and may you live to correct the errors of your life, and to do penance for your political follies.
