MINE EXPLOSION KILLS SEVEN.

A Dozen Others Injured Through Accident in Pennsylvania Colliery.

Portsville, Pa., July 15.—Seven men are dead and about a dozen injured as the result of a mine explosion at the Williamstown colliery this afternoon. All the bodies have been recovered. The dead are James Bowman, Charles Rickert, John Whittle, Jacob Stakum, Arthur Hawk, John Reilly and Anthony Frelas.

The explosion occurred in No. 1 shaft, where thirty men were working, and was presumably caused by one of the miners lifting the gauze from his safety lamp and igniting the gas which followed the blasting of a wall of coal.

The force of the explosion instantly killed six of the miners and Frelas died a few hours after having been carried to the surface.

On account of the black damp it was impossible for the rescuers to enter deep into the workings and it was not until 7:30 o'clock this evening that the bodies of Whittle and Reilly were recovered.

The colliery is owned by the Susquehanna Coal Company, of which R. A. Quin of Wilkesbarre is general manager. It is worked by means of three slopes and two shafts and employs about 1,000 men and boys.
