MISSION TO BE IN SPOTLIGHT WITH FIESTA

Annual Citrus Carnival Will Be Held This Week On A Bigger Scale Than Ever Before

MISSION, Dec. 30—Mission will hold the entertainment spotlight of the Valley the latter part of next week when the three-day Texas Citrus Fiesta will be staged therein a continuous series of educational and entertaining events. Opening with a flourish of trumpets Thursday night, January 11 to herald the coronation of Miss Ferne Willingham of Harlingen as Queen Citriana VII, the program includes three days of various events.

Following the spectacular coronation, in which beauties from 22 Valley cities will take part, a Queen's Ball will be held in the huge Tex-Sun building, a scene of the coronation. The three days which follow are packed with a program which will pay homage to the citrus industry. A Parade of Oranges Friday morning and the Citrus Style Show, presenting 25 Valley models wearing costumes made of citrus or other agricultural products Friday night are highlights of the first full day.

Saturday's main events will include a children's parade featuring decorated doll buggies, novel pet entries, and decorated cycles. Top-notch fruit packers from over the Valley will compete in the fruit-packing contest to be staged during the morning at the Mission Theater, providing one of the colorful and unique events on the program.

Exhibits of citrus products, streets and show windows decorated with citrus, a beautiful flower show featuring exotic Valley flora, and an antique and hobby show are among the continuous features which will be open to the public without charge throughout the three days of the fiesta.

On each of the three days, midget auto races will be staged in the afternoon at the American Legion Speedway, bringing a thrilling and exciting two-hour entertainment to the thousands who will be in Mission for the celebration.

A special feature on Sunday's program will be the seventh Annual Golden Grapefruit Golf Tournament to be staged on the Shary Municipal course with plays starting at 7:30 a.m. Attractive awards have been posted for the tournament winners.

Members of the tournament committee include: Gene Darby, Pharr; Bill Cocke, Harlingen, R. B. Bush, Raymondville; Henry Whittenburg, McAllen; and Peyton Sweeney, Jr., Brownsville.

Newsreel camera men from at least two, and possibly other nationally circulated motion picture productions will be in Mission for the three-day events, shooting highlights of the celebration, according to plans they have made with E. E. Marburger, general chairman. Pictures they will make will draw the attention of the entire nation to the Valley, Mr. Marburger pointed out, and will form one of the largest publicity programs ever launched from the Valley.
