The fund raising has started for the purpose of sending the Nome High School Band to the Music Festival in Anchorage in late April.
This fund has commenced with a $5 contribution which was given in the spirit of sharing, by the students of the 2nd Grade class taught by Mrs. Evelyn Langhus.
Last week at the P-TA meeting, this room was given a $20 prize for having the most parents present for three meetings. These little second-graders had lots of ideas on how to spend their prize money, but were more than willing to give one-fourth of it to the School Band so that they might participate, like other Alaskan school bands, in the annual school festival.
Thirty-three students in the band are eligible to participate in the festival, which is being held this year in Anchorage.
The P-TA has several projects lined up to raise the money for the transportation of the group, which will be housed by the Anchorage schools. Nome is the only school in the state with a good band that has not shared in this big annual event. Music Director, William Bixby stated at the last P-TA meeting that the Nome School Band is well qualified to compete, and will soon be working on the festival music, which is played in ensemble during the festival. The group will also participate competitively in instrumental groupings.
P-TA president Roscoe Wilke announced today that Jim Blanning and Dorothy Young will be co-chairmen for the fund-raising events and will formulate the plans for the trip.
