On Tuesday evening last, our citizens were aroused by a shock, which seemed for a time, to unsettle the 'deep foundations'—it was accompanied by a noise, which we cannot well describe for the want of something by which we can compare it. In the distance, it sounded something like the rolling of a heavy wagon, which the watchman of King Joram, would have supposed to have been driven by 'Jehu, the son of Nimshi'—of whom it is recorded that 'he driveth furiously'—but during the vibration of the earth, the sound became peculiarly unnatural: it was something between a crash and a roar: it had all the solemnity of thunder, accompanied by the harshness of fallen rocks.
The houses in our village were all violently shaken, so much so, that in some places, doors were unlatched and crockery thrown together. Every one we have heard describe it, speaks of the quick and violent shaking of doors and windows. It seemed to us that the doors and windows in which we were, could not have been shaken more quickly and violently had there been a strong man at each door. There was something in the sound and the motion, which might well inspire terror, particularly in those who were awakened out of sleep, to find the earth rolling beneath them, and 'music' as harsh as that described by Milton, when he speaks of the unbarring of the gates of Perdition.—Livingston, (N. Y.) County Whig.
