PUBLIC LIBRARY
IS VALUABLE ASSET
Not everyone appreciates a public library-yet a city lacking an institution of that sort, properly functioning, is a degree behind in educational facilities.
Few persons can afford to secure by purchase the multitude of new volumes published at frequent intervals, no matter of what class may be the subject; and it is only through a well-conducted library that one can keep in touch with new thoughts in fiction, history, or science.
Palatka has in its library a fund of interesting material that is practically free to all who comply with its easily-obeyed regulations. Here are to be obtained sources of information upon many topics, and by the constant patronage of the institution one may cultivate a taste and a desire for knowledge which will lead to higher and better things.
It is a matter of regret that there is but a limited clientele-but it is equally a matter of satisfaction that there is being a gradual growth in the patronage. Reading is a source of education, but it is in some cases a habit which must be cultivated strenuously to prove its educational worth.
The constant reader is at a loss to understand why all people are not the better versed in the literature of the present day; while they who peruse nothing but the daily publications feel, often, that the study of a good book is but wasting time.
Parents should urge the reading of good books by the members of the household. Heads of families would do well to set an example along that same line that the children may emulate. Good books are like good musical compositions; familiarity increases fondness and age adds interest. There is an additional value possessed by the book which the song never can have; the latter comes as a recreation and an amusement, while the book carries with it that which will ever instruct. A volume which does not in some way add knowledge to the reader is a useless publication and might well be consigned to the wastebasket.
The Palatka public library has a large number of volumes that fill the bill: that cater to the tastes of all people; and that will prove a source of advancement for the readers-more especially to the younger class. The books are good alike for all ages there is something for all classes and all minds-and the greater publicity that can be given the Palatka public library the better will it be for the entire city. To show appreciation of its value there should be a more rapid growth in the roster of patrons.
