September 23.

ST. SALVADOR.

We shall likely soon hear of some hard blows being struck off this place, where, it is understood, there are several millions of dollars lying, which the Patriots are anxious to obtain possession of; but which the Portuguese are equally anxious should be placed beyond their reach. By accounts received here, from St. Salvador, to the 13th ultimo, it appears that the Patriot fleet from Rio, sent by the Prince Regent, had been off the port about seven or eight days; the Portuguese squadron of about the same strength was also off the harbour, and the two hostile fleets had been in sight of each other, for that period without firing a gun. A reinforcement of 800 troops had recently arrived from Lisbon, and the Governour-General, Madeira, was making every exertion to fortify the place. It was expected there would be a bloody contest between the Royalists and the Independents, but it was believed the latter would triumph.
