In Defense of Bismarck
(Mandan Pioneer)
Far be it from us to tear our shirt about coming to the defense of Bismarck, but when "Believe It Or Not" Ripley takes advantage of his far away position behind a microphone in New York to take a slam at the weather of our sister city, he is coming too close to Mandan for the Pioneer to take it and like it.
Ripley, in his broadcast Sunday night to Admiral Byrd, told of the mercury having reached 45 below at Bismarck, N. D., and gave the impression that this section of the state compared to Antarctica in winter temperature, and he didn't take the trouble to say that, if such a temperature was recorded, it was way back in ancient history.
We have before us today's weather bulletin, covering reports from 40 different stations. Out of the 40 reports, there are 24 with lower temperatures than North Dakota's twin cities, and but 16 that are higher. The reports of lower temperatures come from Minnesota, Nevada, Canada, South Dakota, Utah, Nebraska, Michigan and Iowa.
Three weeks ago, Northwest Airways reported their planes storm bound in Minnesota and Mandan folks were playing golf.
Today at noon the mercury registers 45 above and it is past the middle of December. Very recently with Mandan thermometers well above freezing, New York and eastern states were storm bound with the mercury well down below the zero mark.
If the rest of Mr. Ripley's "Believe It Or Not" leaves as false an impression in the minds of his hearers as his comparing Bismarck with the Antarctic, they compare favorably with a good many other "news items" heard over the radio.
