Hanover Commencement.

The annual Commencement at Dartmouth College was holden on Wednesday the 22d ult. In the absence of a President, Professor Adams performed the duties of that office. After prayer by the Rev. Mr. Church, Professor Chamberlain, was inducted into office by the Hon. Judge Paine, President pro tempore of the Corporation. Professor Chamberlain's Address is spoken of by the best judges as a specimen of chaste and highly finished Latin composition.

The following were the public exercises:

I. Latin Address, by Professor Chamberlain; which took place of the Oration in Latin and the Salutatory Address, assigned to Mr. S. Foster, who was absent from sickness.

2. English Oration. The connections between civil and religious institutions; by S. Russell.

3. English Dialogue. The character of the Younger Brutus; by T. S. Fullerton and J. Jameson.

4. English Oration. The effects of the American Revolution on the Politics of Europe: by Z. Batchelder.

5. Forensic Disputation. Are public provisions for the Poor expedient? by U. Burbank and J. H. Kimball.

6. Philosophic Oration. The connection between Light, Heat, Electricity and Magnetism: by E. Child.

7. English Dialogue. The importance of American Antiquities; by D. Merrill and S. Morse.

8. Declamation. Another Cosmographical Hypothesis; by A. Cross.

9. Greek Oration. Influence of the Spirit of Grecian Literature upon the intellectual and moral powers; by S. Marsh.

10. English Oration. The connection of moral sentiment with the decisions of taste: by W. J. Moody.

11. Conference. The comparative influence of Natural Scenery upon the Heathen and the Christian Poet; by J. B. Eastman and D. Lancaster.

12. English Oration. Effect of military enthusiasm on the Spirit of National Literature; by J. K. Young.

13. Latin Oration. Comparison of the Hebrew with the Latin Poetry; by Asa Mead, candidate for the degree of Master of Arts.

14. English Oration. Motives for Study offered to Professional men, as Patriots and Christians: by Noah Smith, candidate for the degree of Master of Arts.

15. English Oration with the Valedictory Address. The importance of a vigorous imagination to Professional eminence; by C. White.

The degree of Bachelor of Arts was conferred on the following gentlemen—Henry Adams, Zachariah Batchelder, Caleb Burbank, Thomas Buswell, Eber Cazier, Abijah Cross, Zenas Clapp, Joseph B. Eastman, Stephen Foster, Thomas S. Fullerton, John Jameson, John H. Kimball, Daniel Lancaster, Samuel Marsh, David Merrill, Stephen Morse, William McQuesten, William J. Moody, Samuel Russell, Levi Smith, William L. Walker, Joseph S. Washburn, Charles White, John K. Young.

The degree of A. M. was conferred on twelve gentlemen in course.

The degree of M. D. was conferred on eleven gentlemen who had attended the usual Lectures of the Medical Institution at Hanover.

The honorary degree of M. D. was conferred on the Hon. D. L. Morril of Goffstown.

On Commencement evening eight young gentlemen declaimed before a numerous and delighted audience for the premiums, which have been offered to the best speakers: —

The premiums were adjudged to Charles White, of Thetford, Vt. graduate of this year; Samuel S. Leverett, of Windsor, Vt. and George K. Pomeroy, of Boston, members of the Senior Class; and George Boardman, of Norwich, Vt. member of the Junior Class.

On the Monday and Tuesday before Commencement, the usual Orations were pronounced before the Moral and the Social Friends's Societies, by Abijah Cross and Charles White.

Tuesday being the anniversary of the New Hampshire Alpha of the Phi Beta Kappa, an Oration was pronounced before that Society by the Rev. Mr. Bailey, of Norwich, Vt. The officers of the Society for the ensuing year are, Professor Adams, President, Samuel I. Wells, Esq. Vice President, John Aiken, Corresponding Secretary. The Hon. Jeremiah Smith, was appointed orator for the next anniversary, and Professor Oliver, substitute; Nathaniel H. Carter of Albany, was appointed poet, and Ebenezer C. Tracy substitute.
