Full Text
From the remarks of Mr. Pandelli and the judge, it appeared that the jury referred to had brought in one or more verdicts, which was, or were, as the judge conceived, contrary to the evidence and in opposition to the law. He met Mr. Pandelli on Sunday in the market and told him so, saying or insinuating that they did not discharge their duty as by their oath they were bound to do. It was for this Mr. Pandelli asked a retraction. The judge refused to notice a matter which did not transpire in court. Pandelli persisted in refusing to serve without the apology, and for his obstinacy or contempt of court the judge sentenced him to forty-eight hours' imprisonment in the parish jail.
