The State Democratic Convention assembled in Metropolitan Hall, at 11 A. M., yesterday, to nominate a candidate for the Attorney General.
On motion of Mr. Jas. L. Gordon, of Louisa, Gen. R. A. Banks, of Madison was called to the chair.
On motions made by Messrs. C. White, of Hanover, and Stovall, of Halifax; Dr. Jas. Dove, was appointed Secretary, and Mr. Daniel E. Gardner, of Henrico, assistant Secretary.
The list of the counties was called and the delegates and alternates enrolled.
On motion of Mr. T. A. T. Rielly, of Frederick; after an explanation by Mr. Stovall it was ordered that a Committee be appointed to report a permanent organization, and the following was the committee, viz: Messrs. T. A. T. Rielly, of Frederick; W. M. Ambler, of Louisa; J. Huddleston, of Preston; R. H. Coleman, of Caroline; B. J. Worsham, of Prince Edward; G. D. Wise, of Accomac; J. Seddon, of Stafford: and J. S. Calvert, of Shenandoah.
The committee reported the following permanent organization, viz:
President—Gen. R. A. Banks, of Madison.
Secretaries—R. A. Pryor, W. F. Ritchie, R. B. Alexander, A. D. Banks, Chas. Irving, J. T. Russell, F. J. Alfred, H. M. Garland, jr., Dr. Jas. Dove, and D. E. Gardner.
The committee also recommended that the rules of the House of Delegates be observed, so far as practicable.
On motion of Major O. M. Crutchfield, of Spotsylvania, the report was unanimously adopted.
President Banks returned thanks in brief and appropriate terms.
On motion of Mr. C. White, it was resolved, that the vote be cast by the delegates from each county, representing the Democratic vote of each county at the last Presidential election.
On motion of Mr. Stovall, the Convention took a recess until 4 P. M., William F. Ritchie, Dr. Dove, and H. M. Garland, Jr., having first been appointed a Committee to report the Democratic vote represented in the Convention.
AFTERNOON SESSION.—The Convention re-assembled at 4, P. M., and the special committee reported that 89 counties of the State were represented by 333 delegates and alternates—representing 64,574 of the 90,352 votes cast for Buchanan and Breckinridge in the Presidential election of November, 1856.
The Convention then proceeded to vote for a candidate for Attorney General.
Mr. Walker, of Rockingham, nominated John Randolph Tucker, of Frederick, and the nomination was sustained by Messrs. Huddleston, of Preston, and Ambler, of Louisa.
Dr. Thom, of Northampton, nominated Jas. Lyons, of Richmond, and the nomination was sustained by Messrs. Ellis, of Norfolk city, C. Irving, of Pittsylvania, and T. P. August, of Richmond city.
Mr. Morgan, of Campbell, nominated Jas. Garland, of Lynchburg.
Mr. Monteiro, of Goochland, nominated R. I. Cocke, of Richmond city.
Mr. J. F. Wiley, of Amelia, nominated J. Alfred Jones, of Richmond city.
Mr. H. T. Garnett, of Westmoreland, nominated Robert L. Montague, of Middlesex.
The roll of delegates was then called, and the votes of each delegate and alternate recorded.
In order to allow the Secretaries to report the result of the ballot, the Convention took a recess until 8 P. M.
The Convention re-assembled at 8 P. M., when the following was announced as the result of the first ballot.

Mr. Tucker, having received a majority of the votes represented, was declared the nominee for the office of Attorney General.
On motion of Mr. August, the nomination was made unanimous.
On motion of Mr. Walker of Rockingham, it was ordered that a committee of five be appointed to inform Mr. Tucker of his nomination.
The Chair appointed the following as the committee: Messrs. Walker of Rockingham, Rielly of Frederick, August of Richmond City, Heiskell of Washington, and Wallace of Madison.
On motion of Mr. Stovall, it was resolved that thanks be returned to the officers of the Convention, and also, to W. P. Bocock, esq., the late Attorney General for the fidelity with which he had discharged his duties.
Messrs. August, of Richmond, Irving, of Danville, and Berry, of Alexandria, were severally called upon, and addressed the Convention briefly.
On motion, the Convention adjourned sine die.—Rich. Enq.
