CORVALLIS, Ore., March 11.--With its 29 to 20 win over Washington State college at Pullman February 28 as the freshest scalp on its string, the Oregon Aggie quintet has claimed the 1922 basketball championship of the Pacific coast conference.
Ten victories and only two defeats comprise the Aggie record for the season, according to Coach Dick Rutherford, who recently announced that despite the University of Idaho's highest position in the percentage list, Corvallis school rightfully belongs at the top of the banner.
"Idaho was admitted to coast conference after the current season schedules had been made out, so how can they rightfully claim the championship?" Aggie Captain Dick Stinson wants to know.
"Idaho played only eight games that could be classed as coast contests, and they did not meet California nor the Aggies, two of the three strongest conference quintets, the University of Washington being third.
"Idaho did beat the University of Washington twice on the Idaho floor, but they have only played two coast games, with Washington state, off their own floor."
Both Rutherford and Stinson point out that the Idaho floor is of such unusual shape that the Gem Staters derived a distinct advantage over an opponent when playing at Moscow. The Aggies declare that although many followers of the sport claim the championship for Idaho as against the Aggie on the strength of both teams' showing against the University of Washington, the Aggies really showed best against the Sun-Dodgers.
Idaho beat the northern university twice at Moscow, and the Sun Dodgers beat the Aggies twice, the only two games the Corvallis school lost, at Corvallis, but the Aggies claim that this poor showing was more than wiped out when the championship claimants went to Seattle and trimmed Washington twice in their own territory.
The fact that the Gem Staters did not venture away from their own floor, combined with the fact that the Aggies have met and conquered stronger teams is the basis upon which Rutherford and Stinson found their claims.
"Idaho may claim to be top-dog, but what can they do?" is the Aggie query.
