Girl Reserves Render Interesting Program At Local Y.W.C.A. Branch
The Girl Reserves of the YMCA held a very impressive service at the Branch Sunday afternoon at four o'clock. Despite the rain over seventy-five girls representing the following schools in the city were present: Ashby Street, David T. Howard, Laboratory High, Crogman and Booker T. Washington High Schools respectively. The service opened with soft music played by Miss Helen Gray, chairman of the Girl Reserve committee, as the ushers passed a rose bud to every person present. This was in keeping with the theme of the service which was "Growth."
A beautiful pageant was then rendered by a group of Girl Reserves from Crogman School. Other members included a reading by Miss Gloria Davis, vocal solos by Misses Ollie Leries and Evangeline Bronxdeau and a trumpet solo by Miss Daisy Hunnicut.
The speaker of the afternoon was Mrs. Ethel Maxwell, instructor at the Atlanta School of Social Work and Supervisor of the North district Family Welfare Society. Mrs. Maxwell held the girls spellbound as she spoke to them on "Growth," comparing their lives to the unfolding of a rose as they pass from girlhood into womanhood. All present will long remember the talk by Mrs. Maxwell. The service closed with the singing of "Follow the Gleam." Miss Pollvana Purns of Washington High School presided. Miss Artie Caldwell a senior of Washington High school, led devotions.
