On Thursday last arrived here from the Havana, his Majesty's ship Mercury, Samuel Creighton Goodall, Esq; commander, (of whom Sir George Pococke writes very advantageously) being ordered hither by Sir George as an additional station ship to the Success and Bonetta. She has on board the Spanish bishop of St. Jago, and other ecclesiastics accused of dangerous practices, and ordered to be landed at St. Augustine, where we hear they will be sent as soon as the Bonetta comes from her present cruise.
Sir George Pococke sailed for England from the Havana, the same day as the Mercury left it, in the Namur, and took with him the following other Ships of war, viz. Temple, Marlborough, Devonshire, Infant, San Genaro, and Asumpcion, register Ships, (the two last, with the register-ship, taken at the Havana) with 80 sail of Transports and merchantmen under his convoy: he was parted within 14. of St. Augustine, the 14th inst. and had to that time taken the most extraordinary care of his convoy.
The Ships left at the Havana are, the Bellisle, Rippon, Hampton Court, and Port Royal sloop.
Lord Albemarle, we hear, goes home in the Rippon about the 1st of January. On the 24th of October, three English transports were lost, just as they came out of the Havana by the north wind's suddenly setting in; one of them was the general's Wolf (an old East Indiaman) the Lion was another, the name of the third we have not learnt.
The Spaniards that arrived here on the 6th and 8th Instant, in two English leaky cartel ships, from the Havana, are all landed, and lodged in the new barracks; and the New England provincials, that came in another leaky vessel at the same time, are recovered on board the Betsey transport, to sail with the first fair wind for New York. Both the cartel ships & the transports are to be refitted with all possible expedition, to proceed on their respective voyages.
The other cartel ship that parted with the above two on this coast, we hear, has got into Georgia.
A tender belonging to the Eagle privateer, Capt. Dibdin, of London was on the 8th instant, lost upon Cape Romain shoals, but all the crew were saved.
The Eaglet's prize we hear is arrived at Savannah in Georgia.
