Little Fellow to Escape Police Jumped From Roof and Was Badly Hurt.
New York, Dec. 3.-Fleeing from a policeman, John Stark, 11 years old, of No. 363 Cherry street, jumped from the roof of a two-story building breaking his right ankle and cutting a cruel gash on the side of his head. He is now in Bellevue Hospital. The charge against him is disorderly conduct. Specifically, the charge is playing in the street.
Young Stark with other boys was in Water street looking for something to occupy their active minds. A pile of bricks caught their eyes, and a game of "duck on the rock" was organized. The game proceeded smoothly enough until Patrolman McCabe hove into view.
"Cheese it, de cop!" cried one of the players, and the little fellows scattered in every direction. McCabe drew his club and singled out Stark as his quarry. The terrified boy ran along the street, but the policeman gained on him. He turned into a tenement house and ran up the stairs, the policeman clattering after him.
Up two flights went little Stark, out through an open window and on to the roof of a two-story extension. He had figured on crossing the roof to the next house, climbing in a window and running down stairs again, but there was no other roof. The policeman started out the window and the boy leaped to the street.
McCabe ran down the stairs and around the corner to find young Stark lying on the ground, bleeding from a wound in the head.
