"The Porte gave Notice, on the 14th of this Month, to all the foreign Ministers, that it was expected they should, without Loss of Time, communicate not only to their respective Courts, but also to their Consuls in their Ports of the Levant, the Resolution that has been taken by the Government, forbidding all Vessels, of what Nation soever, to approach the Port of this City by the Dardanelles, till their Passports, Letters, Papers, and Cargoes, have been visited by Persons appointed for that Purpose; and in Case of Disobedience thereto, that they shall be sunk by the Cannon of the Castle. In the Night of the 18th, as this Order could not be transmitted early enough to inform the Ships already on their Voyages, four Vessels (two French Merchantmen, a Venetian, and a Ragusan) passed the Dardanelles, under a very hot Fire from the Forts, without receiving the least Damage, and got into Harbour, which greatly alarmed the City; and the Guards were all in Motion, imagining it to be the Russian Fleet."
