Office of the Nat. Intelligencer,
SIR,
Sept. 14, 12 o'clock.
Not knowing whether you will receive any mail from Baltimore, we think it our duty to inform you, that information is received by express just from that place, that at dark last night, no general action had been fought. The enemy had retired at 12 o'clock yesterday, from the position which he had taken the night before, with a view it was supposed by some to enter into Baltimore in another direction, and by others to go on board their ships. The enemy's bomb vessels were bombarding the fort.
Very respectfully,
GALES & SEATON.
Mr. LYNCH.
A letter from Baltimore of the 15th (Tuesday) 6 o'clock P. M. states, that "The American & British armies were in sight of each other; the British are probably awaiting the effect of their bomb and rocket vessels on the fort. What will be the result of the attack on the fort, cannot be known. The British have considerable advantage from their being able to throw rockets, bombs &c. and remain without the reach of the guns of the fort."
Extract of a letter from Washington, dated Sept. 14. 1814.
"A letter has this moment (20 minutes after 1) reached here from Major Manigault, dated at M'Coy's, this morning, which mentions that a battle was fought yesterday in which the enemy were repulsed'; that he has retreated, whether to his ships or not is unknown, also the extent of loss on either side is unknown, and mentions the enemy's ships were bombarding Fort M'Henry."
