DAY JOINS EQUITABLE.
Resigns as Assistant Attorney General Succeeded by Purdy.

BOSTON, MASS., July 29. The resignation of William A. Day, assistant to the attorney general and the appointment of Milton D. Purdy, to succeed him was announced today by Attorney General William H. Moody, who was in this city on his return from a vacation in Maine.

Mr. Day resigns to become comptroller of the Equitable Life Assurance Society, of New York, to which position he was elected by the new Equitable directors last Wednesday.

He has been in the service of the government since the first Cleveland administration.
