We understand that the surveys of a canal route from Connecticut river at Claremont, to the Merrimack at or near Concord, are nearly completed. Lieutenants Wheelright and Wilson, Topographical Engineers in the service of the United States, aided by Col. Carrigain, Commissioner on the part of this State, have been occupied in making these surveys for nearly two months past.—They commenced their labors at the mouth of Sugar river in Claremont, and pursued the course of that river to Sunapee lake, and thence on the northerly side of Kearsarge mountain by the way of the Blackwater and Contoocook rivers to Concord. In these surveys the Engineers are minute and particular, noting not only the distances, and rise and fall of the ground, with the most perfect accuracy, but also, the nature or quality of the different soils and rocks. Sketches of the adjacent country, sites for mills, the prices of manual labor in the vicinity, the expenses of the various materials used in the construction of locks and other works, the facility of obtaining them, the depth of excavation necessary for every foot of canal, and whatever else may be essential in forming a just estimate of the expense and utility of its accomplishment.
