Full Text

The nomination of Horatio Seymour, as Democratic candidate for President, would call forth enthusiasm throughout the country. Of all men spoken of he would sweep New York by a great majority, and would be sure of New Jersey, Connecticut and New Hampshire. The brave soldier and noble patriot, Gen. W. S. Hancock, while probably not so strong in the States named, would be stronger in Pennsylvania, Ohio and Illinois. It seems clear that of the eminent men spoken of, these two would be the strongest. Yet Senators Bayard and Thurman and Governor Hendricks have a powerful hold on the country and either would call forth an enthusiastic support. More recently Judge Field, of California, Colonel Morrison, of Illinois, and General Payne, of Ohio, have been honorably mentioned. Either of the gentlemen mentioned would carry every Southern State, and it is believed either one, if nominated, would be elected; but either Seymour or Hancock would sweep the country.
