Full Text
It is very convenient for the Richmond Enquirer and the other affiliated presses to raise the cry of Federalism against Mr. Sergeant. The Richmond Whig denies that Mr. Sergeant was ever any thing else but a Democrat. It must be extremely gratifying to the Federalists of the old school to find that nearly every gentleman of real worth, talent, and respectability, that is mentioned in opposition to General Jackson, is sure to be set down as a Federalist. In this way 'the Republican Democratic Party' have successively numbered as Federalists nearly all the first rate men in the country. Truly this displays no little wisdom on the part of these exclusive Republicans! We would not have contradicted the Enquirer. These are not the days to frighten men with raw head and bloody bones. What is Louis McLane but a Federalist? and is he any the worse for that, even in the eyes of Jacksonism? If this is all they can say against Mr. Sergeant, they may as well give over saying anything.
