ASTRONOMY NOTES

By OLAF HALVERSON

The October full moon, which occurs on Friday, October 16, is called the Hunter's Moon. The time of rising on the eastern horizon is only 30 minutes later each evening, because of the small angle it makes with the horizon.

This early sweep of the eastern horizon is a favorable condition for all the hunters. During the rest of the year the moon rises 50 minutes later each evening. A month ago, this same phenomena was called the Harvest Moon.

The moon was the subject of the most ancient astronomical observations. The study of her motion was found both easy and useful. The waxing and waning phases must have excited the curiosity of early people.

To observe the moon's motion it is best to see its first appearance after the new moon is in the southwest. In about five days it will reach its farthest declination south. After that for two weeks it will be farther and farther north each night and at the same time moving eastward.
