Shot 100 Japs

BETWEEN 75 and 100 Japs were accounted for on Guadalcanal by Marine Pfc. Lloyd David Gunnels, 24, of Kirbyville, Tex., when he was attacked in an isolated position while serving as an advance sniper. When attacked, Gunnels hesitated between remaining in his foxhole and returning to his unit, but decided to stay rather than expose his outfit's position.

Finally, though, one Jap bullet struck Gunnels and pierced his right eye. He is pictured above in Oak Knoll Naval hospital, Oakland, Cal. where he is recovering from his wound. Official U. S. Navy photo. (International)
