Sing At Special
Event On April 7

Nelson Eddy, world-famous baritone star of stage screen and radio, will be presented in a special concert at the Bushnell Memorial, Hartford, Thursday evening, April 7.

Eddy has had a spectacular career. It is a record of achievement through a series of straightforward, thoroughly sound musical progressions. It is a heart-warming story of success, but not an unusual one. It begins with a boy with a voice. It shows his work, his struggles, his dogged determination - finally his triumph. In outline it resembles the life stories of other famous Americans whose names from obscure beginnings, grew to be household words in their country.

Nelson Eddy was born in Providence, R.I. He is of Puritan background of old New England heritage on his father's side, with a strain of Dutch from his mother. His mother and father both sang and there was always music in the household. When quite young Nelson was boy soprano in the church choir. At fourteen the family moved to Philadelphia. There he got the first of many jobs he was to do before he was to fulfill his musical ambitions. A friend taught him to write "obits" on a newspaper. He became successively reporter, copy-reader advertising writer. In between times, he took correspondence courses, learned operatic arias from a phonograph, tried to sing.

Nelson Eddy's chance came while he was writing advertising copy by day, studying singing by night. Philadelphia held an operatic competition and Eddy won. The
