Iranian City Wrecked In Quake; Hundreds In Peril

TEHRAN, Iran, (AP) - A shattering earthquake has leveled the south Iranian city of Lar and the Red Cross tonight estimated about 700 were killed and several thousand injured.

Dr. Hussein Khatibi, Iranian Red Cross director, who made the estimate, said he believed 'official estimates of 1,200 to 1,500 were exaggerated. He said upwards of 380 bodies have been recovered and buried.

Shah Mohammed Reza Pahlevi ordered quick relief measures. Iranian Air Force planes parachuted flour, sugar and eggs into the area and set up an airlift to ferry in other food, medicine and tents.

The menace of poisonous snakes added to the horror. It is reported that snakes found their way under the debris and attacked trapped victims. Many of those rescued were suffering from snake bites.

Authorities appealed to Tehran for serum. The U. S. government was the first foreign government to pledge aid. It made 100 tons of flour quickly available.

Lar is 550 miles south of Tehran.
