The Bureau of the Census at Washington has recently issued a statistical report showing the cost of city governments in different parts of the country. People who run away with the commonplace belief that their own town is the most extravagant and ill-managed of any place in the United States, and feel that they get less for the money they pay for taxes, will be glad to learn that the city government costs $32.04 per capita in Lexington, Kentucky; $42.05 in Chicopee, Massachusetts; $29.17 in Springfield, Mo. These figures show advances over the pre-war period of from fifty to seventy-five per cent, and they are fairly typical of the costs shown in cities over the country. All towns and cities reported are heavily in debt, the per capita indebtedness usually amounting to about the same sum as is represented in the above figures of per capita taxation.
