Among the remarkable presentations as nuisances, was that of Mrs. Restell, who was arrested by Gil. Hays, and, on motion of the District Attorney, held to bail in the sum of $2,000. Before the Court rose, Mr. Crafts appeared as counsel for the learned lady, and that gentleman having ascertained the grounds of his client's defence, with a promptitude that began to startle some of the pensioned practitioners at the bar, told the Court he was now ready to go to trial. The Recorder then said the Court had nearly concluded their labors, and could not try Mrs. Restell this term. Mr. Crafts said that he should propose to give bail in the sum of 1,000. The District Attorney opposed the motion and after some consultation the Court reduced the bail to $1,500. At the close of the Court, the recognizances had not been entered into, and the learned lady remained in the careful custody of Gil. Hays.
Among the charges investigated and dismissed by the Grand Jury, was that against Lyon Levy, arising out of a transaction with a person named Oakley.-The public must not forget that, to meet this false charge, Mr. Levy was required by John M. Bloodgood to enter into recognizances in the sum of $8,000.
