What is this article about?
The Nevada Journal refutes the Nevada National's report that Senator Lansing denied membership in the North Star Order, asserting he admitted it to Grass Valley gentlemen and that proof exists in the National's office. The order required swearing not to vote for southern-born men, questioning Lansing's nationalism as Lecomptonism.

National says that Senator Lansing denies
having been a member of the "North Star."
When was the denial made, Bro. Shoemaker?
He said he did not belong to the "Lone Star,"
if the reports of the Union be correct, but,
far from denying that he was a "North Star,"
he once acknowledged to gentlemen of Grass
Valley that he was a member of that order.
But that the editor of the National may not
rely upon the word of Mr. Lansing, we assert
positively that he need not go out of his
own printing office to obtain all the proof he
needs to establish the fact. When our "good
natured" confrere has taken slight pains to ascertain the truth in regard to the former associations of Senator Lansing he will not call for affidavits that he knows are obtainable.
When the denial comes from the proper
source it will be time enough to pull forth the
certificates to vindicate the truth of history.
—Nevada Journal.
The North Star Order required a man, as
we understand, to swear that he would never
vote for any man born south of Mason and
Dixon's line. Senator Lansing pretends to
be a very national man now. But, as his
nationality is confined to Lecomptonism, it
does not amount to much.
