Joe Louis, heavyweight champion of the world will be in Atlanta, Thursday night, October 28th, at Herndon Stadium, 8:15 P. M. The promotion is strictly a benefit affair. He agreed to come here only to Aid Morris Brown College. This exhibition bout will be the first peacetime battle of its kind by Louis in the deep south.
The Brown Bomber will spar three rounds of the scheduled six rounds with heavyweight champion of the south, Master Sgt. Merritt L. Wynn, a former Golden Glove Champion of the bantam, feather and lightweight for 1937, '38, '39 respectively. He is a veteran fighter of the 25th Infantry at Fort Huachuca. He further fought in golden glove competition with the former lightweight champion Billie Joyce of Gary, Indiana and Jimmy Bivens, of Cleveland, Ohio, one of the heavyweights vying for Louis' crown. Sergeant Wynn was a standout in the tournament of champs in Chicago, Illinois. He has shown marked ability as a heavyweight and promises therefore to give the fans the thrill they seek.
The first three rounds of the exhibition will be fought with an outstanding sparring mate from Louis' stable. It should be remembered that Louis was also at one time a Golden Gloves Champion. The sparks may fly.
Other outstanding fighters from the Fort Benning team who will be seen in action are: Bill Williams the army middleweight champion for eighteen months and Fort Benning's champion for two years. Lester Holt, Golden Gloves participant from Pennsylvania. Clifford Wilburn, Fort Benning representative at the championship matches at Ft. Bragg, North Carolina '47, Wilburt Wilson, the winner of six bouts with the 25th Infantry team, Henry Cromwell, who has won two out of two fights. Ernest Brown, Walter Mason and Robert Troger. The card will be further enlivened with several battles between the YMCA team and the Boys Club team.
Louis is still heavyweight champion of the world. Late in September at a meeting of the National Boxing Association in Philadelphia, the champion told reporters he had decided to fight despite his dramatic decision to quit after his Walcott battle. He stated that he would meet the winner of the Ezzard Charles-Joe Baksi fight. December 10 in a 10 round champion-ship fight for the South Century Sports Club in June, 1949. Louis has one of the most enviable heavyweight records in the fighting game.
He defended his crown 25 times against some of the greatest of modern fighters including Jack Sharkey, Max Schmeling, Jack Roeper, Tony Galento, Bob Pastor, Arturo Godoy, Johnny Paycheck, Red Burman, Gus Dorazio, Abe Simon, Tony Musto, Buddy Baer, Tami Mauriello and Billy Conn.
BEAT BILLY CONN
One of Louis' most widely publicized butel fights was against Billy Conn, who was counted out in the thirteenth round after the Brown Bomber found the range.
Last June 25th after a two day postponement because of inclement weather Louis met Jersey Joe Walcott in Yankee Stadium. He kayoed the Camden New Jersey clouter in the 11th round after stalking his prey and absorbing terrific punishment himself in the hunt.
AT HERNDON STADIUM
The fight here will be held in Herndon Stadium which has a capacity of 12,000 and with ring-side seats it is estimated will accommodate 16,000 to 20,000 fans.
More than 24 rounds of boxing will be presented for the fans who love to see the stout hearts of fighting men within the ropes. Tickets may be secured at Herndon Stadium, Yates and Milton, Community Drugstore, Paschal Restaurant, Golden Rod Tavern and Midway Variety, Jonesboro Road.
